A Favorite Yoga Book

Yoga : The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness
by Erich Schiffmann, Trish O'Reilly (Photographer)

Yoga Master Erich Schiffmann does a beautiful job of defining the process of both the inner and outer worlds of yoga. Very inspiring and instructive.

Mantra Instruction

Healing Mantras
by Thomas Ashley-Farrand

This book reveals the powerful effects of mantra meditation. We have tried the 40-day program outlined in this book and it works! You can apply the mantras to any part of your life and watch as the magic of these seed thoughts begin to manifest.

Prosperous Thinking

The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity
by Catherine Ponder

As yogis we know how powerful the mind is, and this book, written by a Unity minister, shows you how to put the mind's power into action. The author builds the case that we are all meant to be prosperous, and that our success does not mean that someone else must fail. We are all meant to be successful, powerful, complete human beings. This book shares the success stories of different people who have used these techniques with positive results.

Already Yoga Classic

Awakening the Spine
by Vanda Scaravelli

An inspiration for all ages, Vanda Scaravelli presents her philosophy of yoga based on gravity, breath and movement.

Literary Masterpiece on Yoga

The Yoga Tradition: Its History, Literature, Philosophy and Practice
by Georg Feuerstein

An immensely scholarly–yet very readable–sourcebook by an eminent yoga researcher and practitioner. A must-have for serious practitioners! Available in hardcover or soft.

A Yogi's Tale

Yoga and the Quest for the True Self
by Stephen Cope

Having lived and worked at Kripalu in the 80s, I could feel the truth of Steve's words. This is a beautiful story that is both personal and illuminating on an intellectual level. I highly recommend it for our students.

Guide To Goodness

The Way of Harmony: Walking the Inner Path to Balance, Happiness and Success
by Jim Dreaver

A modern guide to waking up out of pain and suffering by clearly seeing what is so and living well. Dr. Dreaver uses many practical examples from his own inquiry into life and grounds this knowledge into the world of material prosperity in the here-and-now.

Another Excellent Book

Yogi Bare: Naked Truth from America's Leading Yoga Teachers
by Philip Self

A book of interviews with twenty of America's most well-known yoga teachers, featuring personal stories of how they dicovered the path of yoga and garnered wisdom.

A Great Ashtanga Sourcebook

Power Yoga : The Total Strength and Flexibility Workout
by Beryl Bender Birch

This is the book that I work from for our Ashtanga classes taught at Yoga Hawaii, as well as our YOGA AND THE ATHLETE workshop. Beryl Bender Birch has a tremendous background in this style of yoga and in sports, and beautifully melds the two together. This book is highly recommended if you are interested in Ashtanga, or are injured through sports.

For Home Practice

Ali MacGraw - Yoga: Mind & Body
With Erich Schiffmann

The value of this video comes not from its beautiful presentation and setting but from the instruction given by yoga master Erich Schiffmann. His style of yoga is very Kripalu-like, and even though this yoga flow is gentle, it'll give you a good complete 50-minute workout. (I understand that Schiffmann is working on another video, CD and book, so stay tuned.)

Destined To Become a Classic

Yoga for Wellness: Healing with the Timeless Teachings of Viniyoga
by Gary Kraftsow

Gary Kraftsow is one of the few Westerners certified to train teachers and therapists in the Viniyoga lineage of T. Krishnamacharya and T. K. V. Desikachar. He lives on Maui and wrote this book to cover basic postures, their sequencing, and how to alleviate various ailments through the use of postures. A great reference book.
